DAY 01 : ARRIVAL LEH

Upon arrival at Leh airport, meet our local representative, transfer to hotel. We recommend you complete relax for the rest of the day to enable yourselves to acclimatize at the high altitude. At such elevations, it is extremely important to be accustomed to the climate. In the late afternoon drive to the city centre for an orientation walk in the market and overnight stay at hotel.

 

DAY 02 : LEH

After having breakfast proceed for a full day sightseeing to Thiksey monastery, Hemis monastery and Shey palace. Firstly visit Thiksey monastery which is referred to as ‘Mini Potala’ of India. The monastery is settled on the hill top and is home to around 120 monks. Thiksey is a twelve storied monastery with its amazing and iconic architecture, boasts of 10 shrines and an assembly hall. The monastery houses many stuffs of Buddhist art such as swords, stupas, statues, wall paintings and thangkas (a painting on cotton or silk, depicting Buddhist deity). In-addition, there is also a nunnery in the monastery complex. After that visit Hemis monastery, situated on a green hill and surrounded by spectacular mountains. It is the largest and most popular monastery in Ladakh. Hemis monastery is a rich treasure house of cultural riches of Ladakh. There is the Hemis museum with various Buddhist temples with daily prayers by monks, cultural artifacts from the past, and several gilded statues of various dieties. On the way back visit Shey Palace. The Shey Palace is built up in a very beautiful way and is extended up to 3 floors. The name Shey if translated into Ladakhi means mirror and it is known as the reflection of the palace. It is famous for its scenic surroundings and monasteries. Return and overnight stay at hotel.

 

DAY 03 : LEH – SPITUK – ALCHI – ULEYTOKPO ( 80 KM, 3 HOURS )

After having breakfast leave for Uletokpo which is one of the most wonderful camping sites in Ladakh. On the way, visit Spituk Monastery also known as Pethup Gompa. It is a Buddhist monastery located 8 km from Leh. The monastery is home to 100 monks and a giant statue of Kali. En route visit Alchi monastery, it is said to be the oldest and most famous monastery in Ladakh. The monastery is maintained and looked after by the Likir monastery, it has paintings made by Kashmiri artists, which has a touch of Indian art. This monastery has 6 main buildings. Around lunch time, you will reach Ulleytokpo which lies amidst the snow draped mountains. It is a scenic and ultimate destination blessed with breath taking natural beauty. In the Evening, enjoy sitting on the bank of the river coming down from the Rizong side. Overnight stay in camp.

 

DAY 04 : ULETOKPO – LAMAYURU – LEH ( 180 KM, 6 HOURS)

In the morning leave for Lamayuru monastery via Khaltsi. From here another 22 Km drive will take you to Lamayuru which is the oldest and the largest monastery. The monastery is acclaimed for its murals, collection of thangkas, rich wall paintings, scriptures and statues of different forms of Buddha and distinct deities. In the late afternoon, return to Leh for overnight stay at hotel.

 

DAY 05 : LEH – NUBRA VALLEY (125 KM, 5 HOURS)

After having breakfast proceed to Nubra Valley. Known for its orchards, scenic vistas, Bactrian camels and monasteries, it was originally called Ldumra which meant the valley of flowers. The Nubra valley lies in the north of Leh and is accessible over the Khardungla pass at 5600 meters which is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Visit Diskit and Hundar monastery. Standing atop a hill above the plains of Shayok river, Diskit Gompa is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Ladakh. The 100 ft high Maitreya Buddha statue, which was inaugurated by the holy Dalai Lama is the prime attraction of the Diskit monastery. Besides the Buddha statue, other attractions in the monastery are the ancient murals and frescoes. From the top of the Gompa, one can have a panoramic view of the Nubra valley. Then take a halt at Hundar monastery. Hundar is 8 kms from Diskit and it is popular for its sparkling silver sand dunes with barren mountains as its backdrop. These sand dunes are home to 200 bactarian camels. Reach Nubra and overnight stay in the camp.

 

DAY 06: NUBRA – KHARDUNG LA – LEH (125 KM, 5 HOURS)

After breakfast, proceed for backward journey to Leh, once again driving via Khardungla pass on the World Highest Motorable road. In the evening, explore Leh bazaar for souvenir and some shopping. Overnight stay at hotel.

 

Day 07 : LEH – CHUMATHANG – TSOMORIRI (240 KM, 7 HOURS )

In the morning proceed to Tsomoriri. Stop at Upshi for passport checking. En route visit Chumathang which is famous for the boiling hot sulphur springs by the icy cold Indus river. Visit Sumdah village on the way and another 55 km drive will take you to Tsomoriri, this serene lake is about 4,000 meters above sea level. The Lake is breeding grounds for numerous species of birds. It is 8 Km wide and 28 Km long. This beautiful blue lake plays host to a large number of flora and fauna. Dinner and overnight stay in camp.

 

Day 08 : TSOMORIRI – TSOKAR – TANGLANG LA – LEH (240 KM, 7 HOURS)

After having breakfast proceed to Leh via Tsokar Lake, it is situated in the Rupshu Valley at an elevation of over 14,700 ft is also known as the White Lake because of the amount of salts that get deposited on the banks of the lake. On the way, visit Puga (natural sulphur mine), then visit Taklang La Pass (17,585ft), it is like the gateway to Leh. As one drives through this high motorable pass, scenic views on both sides are likely to make the journey wonderful and then visit Rumtse. Later reach Leh and overnight stay at hotel.
