Karsha Monastery

Karsha Monastery, recognized as the Karsha Chamspaling, under the Yellow Hat sect, was founded by the translator Phagspa Shesrab. The largest and oldest monastery in Zanskar, Karsha Gompa is a massive complex built with white washed building blocks comprising of several chapels and residence for around 100 Lamas. It is predominantly known for Avalokiteshvara temple, which dilates the era of RinchenZangpo through its wall paintings. The bewitching beauty of the location of the monastery is captivating. Currently, the monastery is governed by the younger brother of the Dalai Lama. Inside the monastery, visitors can see the relics of Dorje Rinchen. The cloth painting made of gold and colorful threads depicting the life of Buddha surrounded by his deities is the most spectacular feature of the monastery. Every year Karsha monastery plays host to the Gustor festival. It is celebrated for two consecutive days to mark the victory of good over evil.

 

Some precautions to be observed while visiting a monastery:

  • Visitors are required to take off their shoes before entering a prayer area
  • Do not disturb Monks at prayer, and always ask permission before taking photographs
  • Do not touch religious artifacts
  • Do not drink, smoke, take drugs or spit in the monastery premises
  • Avoid talking loudly or disturbing the peaceful atmosphere
  • In many Gompa’s, you are expected to walk around the premises only in a clockwise direction
  • Women may not be allowed to enter the inner prayer rooms of some monasteries
