Suru Valley

The suru valley is one of the most beautiful fertile valleys of the region with its own unique culture and a rather recent addition for the tourism of Jammu and Kashmir.

Suru lies at an average elevation of 3000m in the foothills of the Great Himalayas. This valley encompasses the catchment basin of the Suru River, which emerges from the Panzella glacier. Extending from Kargil to Panzella glacier, this fertile canyon is cultivated more than any other region in Ladakh.

The Nun and Kun are the most prominent peaks here which offer an excellent combination of alpine slopes, ridges, glacial formations and majestic peaks for adventure lovers. The valley is dotted with picturesque human settlements and lush green fields and colourful range of flowers. The valley is especially picturesque in spring when apricots, mulberry, apples trees are in full bloom and in autumn when the tress are full of fruits. Poplar and willow trees grow in abundance; willow is used to manufacture cricket bats. The population of valley is mainly Muslims who converted their Buddhist religion in the middle of 16th century. The winter is extreme and heavy snowfalls are normal.
