Leh & Around
Leh, the gateway to Ladakh, is located in the Indus river valley at a crossroads of the old spice route from Central Asia to India. Once the capital of the Himalayan kingdom Ladakh, Leh is a small town, easy to get most places by foot.
Leh is better known for its spectacular scenic sites, Buddhist Gompas and Land of Lamas. It is also called “Little Tibet” because of strong influence of Tibetan Buddhism. Barren mountains with beautifully painted Buddhist Monasteries, fluttering prayer flags make this place truly charming.
Leh is easily accessible by foot. The old town is a small area consisting of mud brick houses and narrow lanes which lead to east of Main Bazar which is situated at an elevation of 3505 meters.
The major attraction of Leh is Leh Palace. The former palace of the royal family of Ladakh, it is built in the style of Potala Palace in Lhasa.
